AHeinz57 Pet Rescue & Transport – August Pet Rescue of the Month
AHeinz57 Pet Rescue & Transport
Adel, IA
In 2008, the owner of a little red truck dumped a dog off on the side of the interstate. Who would have thought that from such a terrible act, such wonderful things would come about? The act was witnessed by animal lover, Amy Heinz, who spent days driving back and forth looking for this abandoned and injured dog. She confronted law enforcement officers that were ready to shoot the injured pet on sight and even the Mayor that had an unauthorized dog trap removed. From that day, the dog, currently known as Amazing Grace, was Amy’s dog, and led to the start of AHeinz57 Pet Rescue & Transport.
AHeinz57 Pet Rescue & Transport’s mission is to bridge the gap between traditional shelters and no-kill rescues by providing transportation from traditional pet shelters to no-kill rescues or AHeinz57 foster homes. Daily, volunteers monitor shelters for dogs and cats on the verge of being euthanized. Those pets are then rescued and brought to AHeinz57 and other rescues that have room. Although based in Adel, Iowa, AHeinz57 Rescue has taken pets to rescues as far north as Winnipeg, Canada and south to Topeka, KS, as far East to Peoria, IL and West to Omaha, NE. For those pets that are not taken to a other rescues, they are brought to the Pit Stop before put in an AHeinz57 approved foster home.
The Pit Stop is not only the place where pets traveling on long journeys can rest up over night before continuing on their newest adventure, but for those that will be taken in by AHeinz57, it’s a place where they can get much needed medical attention. At the Pit Stop, newcomers get dewormed, flea treatments, vaccines, spayed or neutered and micro-chipped. The pets are also checked for any contagious diseases before they are placed in foster home.
As with most all non-profit animal shelters, AHeinz57 Pet Rescue does not receive any government funding. All monies raised are through fundraisers or donations. This month AHeinz57 Pet Rescue has a huge fundraising event featuring Rescue Ink, an intimidating group of tattooed bikers that take on the most heinous animal abusers and “show” the offenders a better way of treating animals. Their TV Show, “Rescue Ink Unleashed”, is on the National Geographic Channel and often depicts them surveilling and confronting dog fighting rings and animal abusers. Rescue Ink will spend the weekend hanging out, taking photos, eating and most importantly, helping to raise money for AHeinz57 Pet Rescue & Transport. For more details on the events of Friday, Aug 12 to Sunday, Aug 14, see the Schedule of Events flyer.
Besides money, AHeinz57 has a wish list of much needed supplies which include cleaning and office supplies, pet food, toys, and beds. If monetary donations are not in your budget, you can volunteer your time to help walk dogs, clean the Pit Stop or help with repairs as needed.
Another way you can help includes driving the AHeinz57 transport van or your own vehicle to pick up or drop off a pet at a shelter. Even if it is only a leg of the trip, the few hours of your time that you spend can help save many lives.
Lastly, a wonderful way to help is to become a Foster Pet Parent. By opening up your home to a rescue animal (or two), you are making room for another animal to be rescued. An average foster stay is approximately 2 months. Puppies tend to have a shorter foster stay, while senior dogs or ones with injuries have a longer stay.
